Wiki-Tissue
Table of Contents — Categories and structure
Wiki-Tissue is a new reference source being created as part of the TissueStory project. Until now, there has been no existing source of knowledge that brings together information about all the various positive and interesting aspects – including Hygiene, Environmental and Technology – of the tissue paper products business. Wiki-Tissue will be built in a step-by-step process, with the content carefully controlled and checked.
PLEASE NOTE: Wiki-Tissue is a Work-In-Progress! More content is being created all the time. Your input could be helpful. If you wish to suggest ideas for topics and content, you are welcome to get in touch via the contact function on the site. Contact Us

Chapter 5. Softness & Sheet Structure
1. I Am in Spec . . . but Where Did my Softness Go?
2. Tissue Sheet Softness – Theory, measurement, and chemical applications which can improve it
Softness is one of the very most important characteristics of tissue paper products. But the perception and measurement of softness is very difficult to quantify, making it a complex subject. In addition, because consumer preferences differ so extremely widely throughout the world, softness is valued more in certain markets than others.

Chapter 6. Fibers, Fiber Treatment & Processing
1. Processing Recycle-Based Fibers for Tissue & Towel
2. Market pulp: Tissue has become the biggest global buyer
Selected future topics:
Fiber morphology & influence on sheet properties
Hardwoods versus softwoods
Non-Wood fibers in tissue making
Wood fibers are by far the most important, and costly, raw material going into making tissue paper products. These small hair-like strands are actually advanced biopolymers based on cellulose, the most abundant organic compound on earth. This chapter will cover the morphology, chemistry and physics of these fibers and how high-tech engineering can customize them to get the optimal performance of the tissue sheet.

Chapter 7. Absorption of Liquids
One of the most important functions of tissue paper products is absorption of liquids. Building absorbency into tissue products is done by various methods, depending on the requirements of the market. This chapter will cover topics such as Absorption capacity & rate, Water holding capacity & tenacity, and the influence of the sheet structure.

Chapter 8. Chemistry of Tissue Making
1. Tissue Sheet Softness – Theory, measurement, and chemical applications which can improve it
2. The Effect of Retention Aids on Yankee Coatings
3. Retention Aids – A Versatile Tool for Tissue Manufacture
Paper Chemistry is a special discipline involving chemistry and chemical engineering. Based on the use of various chemicals and functional additives in the tissue making process, a wide variety of tailor-made properties can be built into the sheet to improve and optimize it. This chapter will discuss the use of chemicals throughout the tissue making and converting process.

Chapter 9. Converting of Tissue
1. Tissue Embossing Developments
Converting mainly involves cutting the jumbo reels which come off the paper machine into smaller rolls and folded products that go to the market. During the high speed and precise process, additional economic value and important functional properties can be added to the tissue products at the same time. This chapter will cover converting processes including rewinding, embossing, printing, cutting and folding.

Chapter 11. Automation, Big Data & Process Optimization
The tissue making and converting process is continually being “digitalized” to make use of ever-growing data sources which can help run the process better, save raw materials and resources, and ultimately generate higher profitability. This chapter will look at the numerous diverse ways in which this is being done, and how it will grow in the era of Big Data and Industry 4.0. The key is to turn big data into rich, usable data and act upon it.

Chapter 12. Quality Control
Quality control used to be done after the product was made. Modern methods of quality control are much more proactive, involving not only online inspection and reporting, but even more advanced “preventative” quality control that is being used by the most advanced companies. This chapter will cover these topics and how they can be applied to tissue making.
